When dealing with Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), simple source-separated collection schemes by two-three fractions guarantees broader and more effective participation of households as service recipients.
Collecting separately the Organic (wet) and the residual (dry) fractions ensures households’ broad and effective participation, while allowing adequate treatment of the collected MSW stream through composting of the wet fraction and mechanical sorting of the dry fraction for extracting reusable and recyclables.
When applying two-fractions source-separated collection schemes in lower-population-density areas, the use of compactor trucks with two separated loading spaces allows higher secondary collection productivities (in the range of 240 => 340 medium size containers per shifts), thus optimising efficiency and effectiveness of the service.
